Transforming Safety: Weir Group's Journey to Zero Harm with Intelex

Established over 150 years ago, today Weir Group stands as a global engineering powerhouse, creating innovative solutions for minerals and mining technology markets. With a vast presence of 12,000 employees across more than 60 countries, six continents and 189 sites, Weir Group's operations encompass a wide spectrum, from heavy metal foundries to small service centres delivering parts to customers and installing them on their sites.

Working in partnership with its customers, Weir Group provides the technologies that are at the heart of the global mining industry. With the purpose of “enabling the efficient delivery of the natural resources essential to create a better future for the world”, Weir Group keeps mission-critical operations running and drives environmental footprints down. By challenging the norm with expertise in innovative engineering technologies, Weir Group connects its knowledge to amplify the positive impact of these technologies, creating transformative solutions for sustainable mining.

For a business predicated on zero harm, safety is of paramount importance. "At Weir Group, safety isn't just a priority; it's ingrained in our DNA and ensuring the well-being of our employees and the communities where we work is non-negotiable,” explains Dave Clarke, SHE Data and Digitization Manager for Weir Group. “Thinking Safety First is one of our core values and we are 100% committed to maintaining a zero-harm workplace where every one of our people has a safe start, a safe finish and a safe journey home. Our zero-harm culture is underpinned by our Weir SHE Management System Standards and Protocols – which puts safety first.”

To achieve its core value of zero harm, Weir Group’s operational landscape necessitated an innovative solution to ensure safety management and to streamline reporting for improved decision making and incident prevention. It was critical for Weir Group to have a robust system in place to track hazards, near misses and safety performance effectively on an international scale.

“Previously, each of our sites across the globe operated on separate safety databases. Although we were able to identify hazards and generate basic reports, we had no way of interlocking solutions and were finding it challenging to identify trends between sites. Lacking the comprehensive capabilities we needed, we sought a ‘one-stop shop’ solution to monitor and manage our performance globally and to see all sites across one platform,” says Dave.

This solution not only needed to address challenges across Weir Group’s diverse operations, from heavy metal manufacturing to service centres and field services to kiosks but also across different countries, addressing language barriers and cultural nuances to streamline safety reporting and risk management practices globally.

“At Weir Group, safety isn’t just a priority; it’s ingrained in our DNA and ensuring the well-being of our employees and the communities where we work is non-negotiable.” – Dave Clarke, SHE Data and Digitization Manager for Weir Group.

A quest to reach a zero-harm workplace

The identification of the problem and the solution they needed led to the decision to implement one solution, Intelex’s EHS Management software. The key components of an Audit and Assessment Programme, a Hazard and Risks Register, which serves as a corporate library, integrated into one platform. These elements now form the cornerstone of Weir Group's hazard identification process, streamlining operations and providing a holistic view of health and safety performance across all sites. Working in partnership with Intelex, Weir Group has transitioned from its previous reliance on fragmented data sources to having an overarching view via dashboards using PowerBi that encompass all sites, countries, and locations, eliminating the need to access multiple siloed systems for reporting and analysis.

The structured Audit and Assessment Programme was introduced to ensure Weir Group’s ongoing compliance with safety standards and to continually improve safety practices across all levels of operations. Utilising a centralised data platform further strengthened safety initiatives by enabling better analysis, trend identification, and informed decision-making based on real-time data. This not only enhanced Weir Group’s risk management capabilities but also contributed significantly to fostering a stronger safety culture through proactive safety conversations and reporting.

Intelex’s Behaviour-Based Safety (BBS) software has integrated safety conversations into the wider system to encourage proactive safety discussions. According to Dave “The BBS application, known internally as ‘Safety Conversations’, has enabled us to identify some very real and meaningful conversations and has also helped us improve the proactiveness of our safety culture. Through sharing our learnings and best practices across sites, we have been able to continuously make improvements which have been an important contributing factor in decreasing the rate and severity of our incidents.”

Dave says: “One crucial factor for us as a global company is the use of the language editor within the system which has made it very simple for us to have the same common meaning across each location. This has ensured consistency with each user having the exact same inputs on the system regardless of their spoken language which ultimately helps with a consistent level of dashboard reporting. With the dashboard report we are able to clearly identify trends at the click of report. For example, a hazard may be reported that could be relevant to other regions with similar processes so from there, we are able to alert and put the necessary preventative  measures in place.”

“What sets Intelex apart is not just the technology but also the understanding of our industry-specific challenges. The team worked closely with us to tailor solutions to fit our unique needs, whether it was about managing safety in remote mining sites or ensuring compliance in complex regulatory environments,” describes Dave. “Intelex's system is highly customisable, allowing us to adapt the platform to our specific needs, languages, and reporting structures.”

“We've been able to implement proactive measures, identify potential risks before they escalate, and empower our workforce with the tools they need to work safely every day.” – Dave Clarke

Achieving results

Intelex has played a crucial role in transforming Weir Group's safety culture, improving data visibility, and driving continuous improvement in safety performance across the organization’s global operations.

The integration of Intelex has significantly contributed to a decrease in the Total Incident Rate (TIR), dropping from 0.40 in 2020 to 0.34 in 2023, showcasing a positive impact on safety performance and putting Weir Group among the safest companies in the industry.

“Our safety metrics have improved significantly, incidents have decreased, and as importantly, our employees feel more confident and supported in their reporting of incidents,” shares Dave. “We wanted a solution that could grow with us as an organisation and Intelex has opened new ways of reporting, offering a lot more than we originally thought it could provide. Through this partnership, we’ve grown together, and we have been able to fulfil a potential we didn’t even realise we had for SHE.”

“By leveraging Intelex's platform, we have been able to create a safer work environment and strive towards our goal of zero harm while fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration in safety management.” – Dave Clarke.

Looking to the future

Looking ahead to the future, Weir Group plans to add further to the Intelex system to continuously evolve and improve the ‘one stop shop’ approach already implemented. Together, Weir Group and Intelex are currently exploring additional functionality, such as management of change, and the integration of apps to manage risk management, thereby streamline safety practices further.

As Weir Group continues its mission to make operations smarter, more efficient and sustainable for organisations around the world, Intelex will be there to help support its commitment to its workers and to the environment.

“We're proud of the partnership we've built with Intelex, and we look forward to continuing this journey of safety excellence together." – Dave Clarke.

In the 30 years Intelex has been in business, the organisation has evolved from a small company that offered a platform and App Builder software to helping companies achieve certification with ISO standards. Today, the mission is to eliminate death in the workplace by 2050, by empowering its customers to eliminate workplace deaths, reduce climate impact and build sustainable business.
