Per the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of fatal occupational injuries in the US increased 8.9% between 2020 and 2021. On a 10-year basis back to 2011, the increase is a whopping 10.6%. Normalizing for growth in the economy and workforce over time, the fatal injury rate has stayed virtually flat, hovering around 3.5 deaths/100,000 workers. Why is this? Safety professionals’ access to technology, their influence within the business, and their ability to learn best practices has never been greater, so why aren’t we seeing a decrease in occupational fatality numbers?
